EVENT: International Women's Day celebrations with Visions, Stories and Music

By Laura Hudson Mackay

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year (8 March 2020) Confluence member and storyteller Fiona Morrison, from Wigtown, lead a workshop and round table at Catstrand in New Galloway.

The evening event was inspired by conversations that began at Musee de la Femme in Marrakech, Morocco, during last year’s Confluence the World: Visions & Stories Festival. Uplifting quotes written by the young women who took part in the previous event in Morocco provided pointers to the discussions and were gifted to the women attending.

It was an enjoyable evening of discussion, delicious Moroccan inspired food and performance from both local and emerging female acts, Confluence The World Celtic storyteller, Anne Errington complimented the discussions with enchanting tales of women, from near and far.

The language of women is universal. Speak loudly and freely - for our voice is the confluence of many nations. Here’s to all the #ConfluenceWomen building bridges, not walls - one story, one vision at a time. Happy International Women’s Day!

Later in the evening, ritualistic hymnal performer Pefkin took us on a mesmerising journey of ambient song and otherworldly layering of voice, violin and other objects. And left field experimental pop/art singer, pianist and synth player Luki shared a beautifully mysterious and quirky set.

Pefkin gained recognition as one half of the remarkable duo Electroscope, mixing psychedelic pop, lo fi, drones and folk. As the well known woman behind Boa Melody Bat she also became well known as a distributor of underground music.

Glasgow based pianist, singer and synth player Luki has been featured as one to watch on BBC music introducing.
Luki’s. . witchy soprano, elegant piano and synth create a sense of time and place out of joint, as if Delia Derbyshire and Brian Eno set up shop in an Edwardian parlour.
